Early Childhood Education in Contexts of Racial and Ethnic Divisions Conference

The conference will consist of three to four round table discussions with the experts on common strands about delivering programs of early childhood education in contexts of ethnic division. The experts will meet two days prior to the conference to discuss these strands and will continue their discussion with the audience. Consequently, there will be no programm with distinct individual key-note speeches. Rather, participants will be able to follow in-depth discussions and participate in them.

Invited experts at the round tables include: Ileana Seda-Santana (Universidad Autonoma de Mexico), Michel Vandenbroeck (Ghent University, Belgium), Zvi Bekerman (Hebrew University, Jerusalem), John Bennett (consultant for UNICEF/OSI/REF), Karina Davis (University of Melbourne, Australia), Khaled El Andaloussi (Universite Mohamed V, Morocco), Silvia Helena Koller (Universidad Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), Mugyeong Moon (Korea Institute of Child Care and Education), Rebeca Puche (Universidad del Valle, Colombia), Rita Swinnen (Bernard van Leer Foundation) and Zorica Trikic (International Step by Step Association, Serbia).

In this session we wish to explore challenges, pitfalls, tensions and paradoxes linked with working towards respect for diversity and social inclusion.

15h15  Session 3: If ethnicity and structural aspects of inequality are linked, can we still talk about a role for early childhood education or early development and learning?

In this session we wish to explore what may be features of successful projects in different contexts.
